About my work
My paintings are openings to see the world beyond ourselves. They highlight the animacy of the non-human beings that we share the world with, and the struggle for coexistence on a human-dominated planet. In my work, the presence of humans is etched into the land, but the focus is the landscape of ecological relationships that surround us. A true romantic at heart, I believe that our environment is imbued with generosity, and I know that we, as humans, have a responsibility to reciprocate. Painting is my love letter to my home, and my bouquet of flowers to the flowers themselves.
My process combines painting and drawing from life and then filtering that through a more imaginative lens in my studio. Large washes of paint often inform the composition itself, and layers of sensitive brushstrokes put the subject in focus. Both naturalistic and intentionally staged, I paint single moments of gentleness, decision, contemplation, or reckoning which echo our current moment of an uncertain future. All dressed in a hazy light, could it be the warm glow of bright times ahead, or the harbinger of a storm?
